Once you check out all of the pagodas and tea shops of Burma’s biggest city, give yourself a break and grab a drink at one of these Yangon bars.
Union Bar & Grill
Union Bar and Grill is a great spot for bites and cocktails. Located on Strand Road, Union has a top-notch cocktail list that has something for everyone. Gin lovers will be set with the Nicrony, a gin cocktail with Campari, grapefruit juice, cracked ice, and a grapefruit twist. Soak up the alcohol with a snack like the Vietnamese Spring Rolls with shrimp, pink pomelo, and hoisin. If you need an excuse to keep drinking, try the Apple Jack with housemade holy basil infused vodka, triple sec, fresh apple juice, and lemon. Take yourself back to Union in the morning for the a la carte breakfast with dishes like the Breakfast Quesadilla with chorizo, scrambled egg, and green salsa.
Housed in the trendy TS1 Yangon space, Port Autonomy is a trendy pop-up spot with killer food by Chef Kevin Ching. After noshing on something like the Goan Fish Curry with lemongrass, cilantro, and coconut, toss back a Thu Thu’s Negroni with coconut infused Campari, gin, lime or a Jetty Punch with white rum, pineapple, lemongrass. Keeping it simple? Order the chilled tequila shot with a perfect little watermelon pickleback.
Love Japanese whiskey? Head to Gekko Restaurant in the historic Sofaer & Co. Building in downtown Yangon. While the restaurant specializes in Yakitori, the drink list stands out too. The team from Singapore’s 28 Hong Kong Street bar created the cocktail list that features whiskey-focused drinks like the Hanami Old Fashioned with Japanese whiskey, hanami tea syrup, bitters or lighter mixes like the Shiso Mojito with sweet potato shochu, green chartreuse, fresh lemon, shiso, and soda. Cigar smokers will delight in the cigar menu that features a range of Cubans to choose from.
Rangoon Tea House
Ok, yes this is a tea house, but it’s still not to be missed. Rangoon Tea House is a great spot to chill and offers Yangon’s best Chai tea. Give your liver a break and stop here for a caffeine boost before getting back to the hard stuff.
The bar team at Escape Gastrobar is a dedicated bunch of people. From hand-squeezed juices to housemade special ingredients, there is a great level of care put into every drink. The bar prides itself on offering playful drinks, so try something fun like the Gangnam with sochu, organic apple juice, honey, and lemongrass. If you’re going hard, sample something from the shot bar with 50 varieties to choose from. Escape Gastrobar offers a Tapas Menu for small bites like Scallops a Fiera served on a bed of mashed potatoes and homemade chili paste. Don’t go home hungry and order a few to share.
