As the winter months arrive for many around the world, the dark nights are drawing in and the need and desire for warmer climates are on some people’s minds. There are however incredible destinations that are picture perfect winter scenes, for those that like to embrace the colder weather. Beautiful snowy majestic peaks, freshly powdered quaint villages, towns and cities await your arrival, glistening in the cold air and shimmering in the sunlight. We have highlighted a few select locations around the world to inspire you for a beautiful winter escape.
Banff – Canada
One of the most popular destinations for a winter getaway is Banff in Canada. Nestled within the towering Rocky Mountains and the national park, this lovely resort town has much more to offer than just incredible slopes for skiing. You can take to frozen lakes for some fun filled ice skating, both indoor and outdoor venues are available and 90% of them are free! Enjoy dog sledding with a team of beautiful husky dogs pulling you through the mesmerizing landscapes with your friends. There are also many great places for delicious cuisine and amazing drinks in the town itself or the neighboring hamlet of Lake Louise. You can find sumptuous steaks or yummy vegan meals, picnics to enjoy in the parks, in-house distilleries, fresh juices and organic coffee houses. Or why not experience ‘Hygge’, roughly translated as ‘Art of being cozy’. Imagine warm open log fires, large soft woolen blankets and enjoying total relaxation with a friend or a loved one.
Apennine Mountains – Italy
The Apennine Mountains are a range of 21 peaks stretching 1,200km along the stunning peninsular of Italy. As you can imagine such a huge backbone of mountainous spine tingling ridges provide some breathtaking views. Some of the highest mountains have snow all year round but during the winter months, this extends to some of the lower and more accessible regions. This gives a soft white cloak of some of the most picturesque scenes you are ever likely to see across the whole of Italy. Ski season usually starts around the 8th of December in most places with the first fall of deep snow. Alongside some of the most wonderful slopes in Europe, there are a vast amount of fascinating and exciting excursions to discover. For the more adventurous explorer, you will find kite-skiing or ice climbing and for the more laid-back traveler, you can try snowshoeing in the beautiful dense woods under the stars or even tracking some intriguing wildlife and animals.
Bavarian Alps – Germany
Expanding from Germany’s secluded southeastern corner, the Bavarian Alps create a spectacular natural divide spanning along the Austrian border. This whole region has some of the prettiest locations in all of Europe. If you are looking for a winter romantic getaway with your partner or loved one this should surely be on your destination list. As like most of the European winter locations, amazing skiing and snowboarding slopes are in abundance. At many of the resorts here you will experience complete bliss and relaxation in the most beautiful and fairy-tale surroundings. Picture small charming villages with traditional wooden rooftops coated with fresh sparkling snow. Enjoy warm comforting drinks and delicious food at alfresco cafes and restaurants close by. If you are looking to pamper yourself there are also many health resorts and spas with incredible treatments that will sooth your body, mind and soul.
Budapest – Hungary
If you are looking for a snowy escape but would still like to enjoy some city life, then we recommend Budapest as a great destination to visit. When the snow starts to fall over the cobbled streets and ancient buildings, it’s a lovely, romantic and beautiful place. Couples huddled closely together walking arm in arm keeping each other warm, winding through the streets on their way to a cozy and friendly bar or restaurant. They also have idyllic cruises along the stunning river Danube, with candle lit dinners of fine cuisine and a breathtaking view of city. The Buda castle is also a wonderful heritage site to discover, as the sun sets it sends warm rays of light across the hard impenetrable stone. Soft flakes of snow fall, covering the surface with a sprinkling of light icing sugar coating. You can also take to one of the parks which has been turned into an outdoor ice rink, mixing with the locals, laughing and falling head over heels in love with Budapest.
